America in all its Glory

Mabry Mill, Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia

What a gorgeous shot of Mabry Mill in the Blue Ridge Mountains (Virginia). Such a peaceful, serene setting.

Sitting on the edge of the water. Taking a worm and baiting it on the hook of a line that is attached to a long, thin tree branch. Gently "cast" the line into the water. Now to sit quietly, watching the dragonflies skip across the surface of the calm water. Listening to the frogs calling to one another. All the thoughts of your daily life are no longer with you - all you are thinking about at this moment is the beauty of the trees, where they simply meld into the banks of the water.

Who cares if you ever get a nibble on your line. Just to enjoy this moment that you will never live again. That is life!

Every crime committed by an illegal immigrant should never have happened!!!

Read my posting under Illegal Immigrants.

A quote from President Theodore Roosevelt addressed on immigration in 1907:

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American ... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag ... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language ... and we have room for but one sole loyalty, and that is a loyalty to the American people."

The best damn Clam Chowder Bowl anywhere!

The Original San Francisco Sourdough French Bread Since 1849

If you like clam chowder, then you really have to try the Clam Chowder Bowl at Boudins. They make their own sourdough bread and make their own clam chowder. This has to be the best I have ever had.

Their locations in San Francisco are Fisherman’s Wharf (2 locations): 156 Jefferson St. & 2890 Taylor St.; Pier 39: (next to arcade) and Ghirardelli Square: 900 North Point St. Their other California locations are San Diego, Costa Mesa, Corte Madera, Santa Clara, San Mateo and Walnut Creek.

eatZi's

No, that is not a mistake. That is the way it is spelled - eatZi's. I was going to do my first dining post on eatZi's, however, I hesitated when I found out that some of them had closed and needed to do a little research to make sure any of the eatZi's was still open.

Gladly, at least the original eatZi's in Dallas is still open and appears to be the one that will remain open.

Phil Romano of Macaroni Grill and Fuddruckers owns eatZi's.

I have only eaten here once (being from So. California and only getting to Dallas occasionally) and it was the location in Houston. I was very impressed with the place. I only came in for a sandwich, but it took me forever to decide what kind to have. The hardest decision was the bread. The selection is endless! I honestly cannot remember what kind I ordered, but it was outstanding.

Inside you will find a full deli where you can order sandwiches or salads to eat there or to go. There is also a grill where you can order fine steaks.

There are also shelves of fine condiments and wine. A refrigerated case holds fresh chef-crafted meals, already packaged and ready to travel including single and family portions with selections ranging from pasta to sushi to desserts and so much more.

eatZi's is located at 3403 Oak Lawn Ave., Dallas, TX - (214) 526-1515. Should you come across one in another town, stop and eat! You won't be sorry!

Babes Chicken Dinner House

Every once in a while, my post will be about places that I have found to eat that are well worth mentioning to anyone passing through or vacationing nearby.

Having been born and raised in Texas (a transplanted Californian for 37 years) it is hard to find good southern food in California. So when I go back to Texas for visits, naturally, the first thing I want is a good homecooked meal by Mom or my sisters. The second thing I want is to hit eateries that I have been to before and absolutely love. So, I thought I would share them with you.

This is Babes Chicken Dinner House in Roanoke, Texas (just north of Ft. Worth).

Babes has several locations - all in Texas (Dallas, Garland, Sanger, Carrollton, Burleson, and of course this one in Roanoke) and they also have Bubba's in Dallas, owned by the same family.

A little bit about Babes.
On April 22, 1993, Paul and Mary Beth Vinyard opened the first Babe's in Roanoke, Texas, located North East of Ft. Worth and West of Grapevine. It has only 155 seats and is located in a warehouse building built in 1908. "Babe" is Mary Beth's nick name; she developed the recipes so we named the restaurant Babe's.

The Babe's in Garland was opened in May of 1994. Over the years we have developed a broader menu for this Babe's, including many of the items we now serve in the other Babe's locations in Sanger, Carrollton and Burleson.

Paul and Mary Beth also own Bubba's in Dallas, on Hillcrest near S.M.U., Bubba is Paul's nickname. Bubba's is a 1927 Texaco Service Station converted to an Art Deco styled Restaurant. We opened Bubba's in 1981.

It sure doesn't look like much from the outside, but anytime it is open, you will find every one of those mismatched chairs outside filled and then some. In the summer time, a mister (the kind that gently sprays water in a mist - not the gentleman kind!!) will keep you cool while you are waiting outside.

Inside is just as rustic as the outside, with high ceilings and overhead fans and original brick walls.

Seating is picnic table/bench style.

Here is the way you order at the Babes in Roanoke - you only get a choice of Fried Chicken or Chicken Fried Steak. And that is the extent of what your order!

The sides dishes are served family style - Mashed Potatoes, Creamy Gravy, Green Salad, Grandma's Corn, Homemade Biscuits. And you can get refills of the side dishes.

Both the chicken and steak have a wonderful lightly seasoned crispy crust, not soggy from oil. The meat is moist and tender.

The gravy is truly Southern Gravy (not the paste that is served here in California!).

The salad, mashed potatoes and corn are great - but the biscuits . . . well, you will want to order some to take home with you!

At the other Babes locations, except for Dallas, they also have pot roast and smoked chicken with green beans an addition to the sides.

At the Dallas Babes location, their menu is much larger - Fried Chicken, Chicken Fried Steak, Fried Chicken Tenders, Grilled Chicken Tenders, Fried Catfish (yummy!) and Chicken & Dumplings - and a large assortment of sides.

You can click Babes and get addresses and phone numbers for all of the Babes locations.

Go seek them out, sit down and enjoy a true homecooked meal!!!

Then when you are done, drive around Roanoake (what there is of it!) and enjoy the small town feel.
